1923 Joe Dugan New York Yankees World Champions Gold Pocket Watch "Yankies"

This 14K gold Elgin pocket watch is dated to be from 1922 - 1925 by the case and dial design as well as the blue color and form of the hands. The reverse of the watch is engraved "JOE A. DUGAN 3rd BASE NEW YORK YANKIES WORLD CHAMPIONS 1923".

The noted misspelling of Yankees as "Yankies" is odd. In 1923 the New York American League Ball Club had not formally adopted the name Yankees, and would not until a reincorporation of the company a number of years later, but the name Yankees is what they were called by fans and press. Therefore, while highly unlikely, it is possible that the engraver of this watch did not know how to properly spell the name. We spoke with the Curator of the Yankees Museum about this watch and while he was unable to give us any further background he did joke that "The engraver probably lost his job the next day."

The watch does not work.
