Harold Russell was an American World War II veteran who became one of only two non-professional actors to win an Academy Award for acting. On June 6, 1944, while Russell was an Army instructor, teaching demolition work with the U.S. 13th Airborne Division in North Carolina, a defective fuse detonated TNT explosives he was handling and he lost both hands. He was given two hooks to serve as hands for the remainder of his life. In 1946 after his recovery, and while attending Boston University as a full-time student, Russell left campus to film "The Best Years of Our Lives" for which he would win the Best Supporting Actor Award as well as an Honorary Award. Russell also has the distinction of being the only performer to sell his Oscar award at auction, it is no longer permissible for a winner to sell their Oscar under threat of law-suit by Motion Picture Academy.
