Tom Brady's 2000 Bowman Chrome card, #236, is one of the key rookie cards of modern football. Beckett's ranking of Brady rookie cards notes that Topps issued only two Brady rookie cards, and this is one of them. It comes in two forms that collectors price very differently: the base card, printed on chromium stock with a glossy finish (Heritage lot text), with 1,228 PSA 10s on record in October 2026; and the unnumbered Refractor parallel, inserted about once every 281 packs, of which PSA had graded seven Gem Mint copies out of 140 by February 2023. This file covers the set, Brady's path from the 199th pick, the populations and the public sales record.

The card and the set

The Trading Card Database (TCDB) checklist gives 2000 Bowman Chrome a 270-card base set with 115 cards flagged as rookies, matching the “115-player rookie class” a Fanatics Collect lot description cites. Brady's #236 sits between Thomas Hamner (#235) and Deltha O'Neal (#237). The same rookie class includes Jamal Lewis (#170), Chad Pennington (#173), Plaxico Burress (#174), Shaun Alexander (#177) and Brian Urlacher (#178). Companion sets listed for the product include Refractors, Rookie Autographs, Ground Breakers, By Selection, Rookie of the Year and a Scout's Choice Update.

There is also a paper 2000 Bowman #236 Brady. Sports Illustrated's January 2026 report points out that the Bowman and Bowman Chrome rookies “look similar, but they come from different sets.” Within Bowman Chrome, PSA's guide lists two entries for #236: “Tom Brady (R)” and “Tom Brady (R) REF,” the Refractor. Beckett says the Refractor is not serial-numbered and is “extremely popular today, even without a serial number.” A Fanatics Collect lot text from January 2025 calls it an unnumbered short print that turned up “once every 281 packs.”

Brady in 2000

Brady was born August 3, 1977, in San Mateo, California, and played college football at Michigan. The New England Patriots took him in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft, 199th overall (Pro Football Reference). In his rookie season, the year of this card, he completed one of three passes for six yards. He became the starter in 2001, after Drew Bledsoe was injured in Week 2 against the Jets (Wikipedia).

He played 23 seasons, 2000 to 2022: 20 with New England and three with Tampa Bay, 335 games in all. He finished with 89,214 passing yards and 649 touchdown passes, both NFL records, made 15 Pro Bowls and was AP MVP three times (Pro Football Reference). He won seven Super Bowls, six with the Patriots and Super Bowl LV with the Buccaneers, and was Super Bowl MVP five times; the Patriots have retired his No. 12 (Wikipedia).

Left: a base card with a silver-grey gradient standing for chromium stock, a hatched blank photo window and a grey name bar. Right: the same outline with a pale blue-violet gradient that only marks it as the parallel, not the real finish; a dashed inner frame sits off-center to the right and down, showing a centering shift, exaggerated. Under the right outline: about 1 in 281 packs, no serial number. No photograph, logo, signature, card art or grader label is drawn. Card outlines (circled numbers):

  1. Chromium stock: Heritage's 2025 lot text describes the card's glossy finish and chromium stock, the feature that separates it from the paper 2000 Bowman #236.
  2. Card number: #236 is one of 115 rookie cards in the 270-card set (TCDB checklist; Fanatics Collect lot text).
  3. Refractor: a parallel of the same card with no serial number (Beckett), inserted about once every 281 packs (Fanatics Collect). PSA lists it as its own variety.
  4. Centering: Fanatics Collect's 2022 lot text says the set's Refractors were often affected by centering shifts or print defects; the dashed frame shows a shift, exaggerated.
Figure: drawn for Crazy Uncle's Card Notes from the Heritage and Fanatics Collect lot descriptions, the TCDB checklist and Beckett's Brady rookie-card ranking listed under Sources. Generic outlines, not the real card: no photo, logo, signature or grader label, and the Refractor shading is only a marker, not its real finish. Not to scale.

PSA's population report and Auction Prices Realized pages for this set now ask for a sign-in, so the counts above come from the price tracker Card Ladder and from the population line printed on auction lot pages; check PSA's report before relying on them. The pattern is still plain. The base card has about 2.5 PSA 9s for every PSA 10, and more than 1,200 PSA 10s. The Refractor's PSA 10s were in single digits in 2023, and a 2022 Fanatics Collect lot text says the set's Refractors were often affected by centering shifts or print defects. See the population report guide for how these counts work.

Recent market data runs ahead of PSA's base-card guide. SportsCardsPro, read October 21, 2026, put a PSA 10 at $22,303, a PSA 9 at $8,709 and an ungraded copy at $3,956, and listed PSA 9 sales between $7,668 and $9,999.95 from October 6 to October 20, 2026. Card Ladder counted 43 PSA 10 sales between July 21 and October 21, 2026, averaging about $24,410 (low $20,350, high $31,100), and 107 PSA 9 sales averaging $9,728. These are estimates and averages; individual results are in the table below.

Chart: drawn for Crazy Uncle's Card Notes from the auction lot pages in the sales table; prices as reported, in date order. Refractor sales are left out because they sit on a different scale.

The base PSA 10 went from $6,420 in mid-2020 to $20,400 in September 2021, back to about $10,000–11,000 in 2025, and above $20,000 again by late 2026. The Refractor trades on another scale: both Refractor PSA 8 results in the table are higher than every base PSA 10 result in it. Sports Illustrated's January 2026 report says a Bowman Chrome Refractor “(population 7)” set a Brady Bowman-card high of $498,000 in 2022, without naming the grade or venue, and that a paper 2000 Bowman Gold PSA 10, one of three, passed it at $675,000 on REA's fixed-price marketplace. SportsCardsPro also lists a $3.5 million Fanatics result for a Refractor PSA 10 dated December 16, 2023; no lot page for it was found and it conflicts with SI's report, so it is not in the table.

Checking a copy

  • Confirm the set: the Bowman Chrome card is on chromium stock; the paper 2000 Bowman #236 is a different card with its own price guide.
  • Read the variety on the grader's label and cert record. PSA lists the Refractor separately, and because it carries no serial number, the label is what identifies it.
  • Verify the cert number on the grader's own site (how) and check the holder against the fake-slab guide.
  • Check centering on both axes and tilt the surface under one light for print defects (see the condition glossary).
  • Compare like with like: base and Refractor, PSA and BGS, and recent dates; this card's prices have moved a lot since 2020.
  • Re-check the population on the day you look; the counts above are a snapshot.
