Charizard Pokémon cards

The Charizard cards collectors look for, what kind of card each one is, and what the most valuable ones sold for raw and in PSA 10.

Charizard cards run from the 1999 Base Set holo to the gold Mega Charizard ex cards of 2025 and 2026. Wargamer calls it “the most popular Pokémon in the entire Pokémon TCG.” This page lists the notable English Charizard cards with their set, number, rarity, artist and release date as recorded in the Pokémon TCG API, groups the full arts, alternate arts, illustration rares and gold cards, and ranks the most valuable by PriceCharting's prices as of October 26, 2026. Ungraded and PSA 10 prices are shown in separate columns and never mixed in one ranking. This is a reference, not buying or investment advice.

Notable Charizard cards at a glance

The table runs in release order. It is a selection, not a complete list: it covers the Charizard cards that appear in the value tables below or stand for a rarity type, plus the main reprints of the Base Set artwork. Rarity is the label the API uses, which is not always the name collectors use; the API calls the Gold Star card Rare Holo Star and the rainbow cards Rare Rainbow, for example.

Mitsuhiro Arita's Base Set artwork recurs throughout: the API credits him on the 1999 original, the Base Set 2 and Legendary Collection reprints, the 2016 Evolutions card and both Classic Collection reprints, in 2021 and 2026. The Skyridge and Plasma Storm cards are numbered above their sets' printed totals (146/144 and 136/135); the API labels both Rare Secret.

Full arts, alternate arts, illustration rares and gold Charizards

Most searches for a “Charizard full art”, “alt art” or “gold Charizard” lead to a handful of cards. The table sorts them by type. A card can belong to more than one group; the Hidden Fates and Shining Fates Shiny Vault cards are also full-art cards, for example.

  • Alternate full art. Brilliant Stars has two full-art Charizard V cards in the API, #153 by N-DESIGN Inc. and #154 by Ryota Murayama, both labelled Rare Ultra. Wargamer lists a “full art” and an “alternate full art” Charizard V for the set; #154, the scene illustration shown below, is the alternate full art.
  • Special Illustration Rares. AKIRA EGAWA drew two of the four Charizard SIRs in the table, the Obsidian Flames and Paldean Fates cards. The Mega Charizard X ex SIR from Phantasmal Flames is the most valuable of the four ungraded, at $620.06.
  • Gold cards. “Gold” covers three different things: the 2006 Gold Star card (the ★ after the name), the all-gold Hyper Rare and Mega Hyper Rare cards of the Scarlet & Violet and Mega Evolution eras, and gold-plated novelty cards. PriceCharting files a gold-plated Charizard under Burger King rather than under any card set ($54.99 ungraded).

Most valuable Charizard cards

The ranking uses PriceCharting's ungraded price for English singles, read on the card pages on October 26, 2026. Edition variants (1st Edition, Shadowless, reverse holo) count as separate cards because PriceCharting prices them separately. Japanese cards, sealed products, product-exclusive versions such as the Celebrations Ultra Premium Collection Charizard, and novelty cards are left out. The PSA 10 column is shown for comparison only, with PriceCharting's estimate of how often a PSA 10 copy sells.

  • Three cards above $6,000 raw. The 1st Edition Base Set Charizard ($6,956.11), the Skyridge secret rare ($6,150.00) and the Gold Star ($6,084.89) sit within about $900 of each other ungraded.
  • The PSA 10 order is different. By PSA 10 price the 1st Edition Base Set leads at $335,000.48, followed by the Legendary Collection reverse holo ($178,585.71), Skyridge ($141,300.00) and Plasma Storm ($87,521.93). The Gold Star drops to sixth ($54,146.62), behind the 1st Edition Shining Charizard.
  • Thin markets. Several PSA 10 figures rest on one to three sales a year, so a single sale can move them. The Unlimited Base Set Charizard's PSA 10 ($26,603.23) is above the Shadowless one ($24,808.28), although PriceCharting shows about one Shadowless PSA 10 sale a year.
  • Two modern cards make the top 15. The Hidden Fates Charizard-GX and the Phantasmal Flames Mega Charizard X ex SIR are the only post-2016 cards in the table, and they trade far more often: PriceCharting puts PSA 10 sales at about 2 and 9 a day.

Below the twelve, the Shining Fates Charizard VMAX SV107 was at $102.50 ungraded, the Obsidian Flames SIR #223 at $89.41, the Brilliant Stars Charizard VSTAR #174 at $55.11 and the gold Obsidian Flames #228 at $32.21. Some cards are cheap raw and expensive in a 10: the 2016 Evolutions Charizard #11 showed $80.00 ungraded but $9,899.99 in PSA 10, and the Burning Shadows Charizard-GX #150 $290.00 against $7,250.00. A PSA 10 price says what a 10 sells for, not what a raw copy will grade; the arithmetic is on is it worth grading?, which uses the 151 Charizard ex #199 as a worked example.

The Base Set Charizard and the record sales

The 1999 Base Set Charizard is the card most people mean by a valuable Charizard. Sports Illustrated reported that a PSA 10 1st Edition copy sold for $1,000,952.84 on eBay on September 9, 2026, and that a PSA 10 Gold Star Charizard from Dragon Frontiers was the week's second-biggest TCG sale, more than $600,000 behind. PriceCharting's PSA 10 summary for the 1st Edition, $335,000.48, sits far below that sale; PriceCharting shows a PSA 10 copy changing hands only about twice a year. How to tell a 1st Edition, Shadowless and Unlimited copy apart, the graded populations and the earlier sales are in the Base Set Charizard #4 card file; the biggest sales of all Pokémon cards are on the most expensive Pokémon cards.

Charizard on this site's set pages

  • Phantasmal Flames (2025) prints Mega Charizard X ex four times, as #013, #109, #125 and #130, with pull-rate estimates for the Special Illustration Rare and the gold Mega Hyper Rare.
  • Ascended Heroes (2026) has the gold Mega Charizard Y ex #294 and the Double Rare Mega Charizard Y ex #022.
  • 30th Celebration (2026) reprints the Base Set Charizard as 4/102 in its Classic Collection.
  • The Gold Star Charizard's grade-10 count is compared with other Gold Star cards on the rarest Pokémon cards.

Questions collectors ask

What is the most expensive Charizard card?

By public sale, the PSA 10 1st Edition Base Set Charizard at $1,000,952.84 (eBay, September 9, 2026, as reported by Sports Illustrated). By PriceCharting's summaries as of October 26, 2026, the same card also leads the value table above, both ungraded ($6,956.11) and in PSA 10 ($335,000.48).

What is the gold Charizard card?

Usually one of four cards: the Dragon Frontiers Charizard ★ δ (Gold Star, 2006), the Obsidian Flames Charizard ex 228/197 (Hyper Rare, 2023), the Phantasmal Flames Mega Charizard X ex 130/094 or the Ascended Heroes Mega Charizard Y ex 294/217 (both Mega Hyper Rare). Their ungraded prices ranged from $32.21 for the Obsidian Flames card to $6,084.89 for the Gold Star as of October 26, 2026.

What is the best Charizard full art or alt art?

“Best” is a matter of taste; by price, the most valuable modern full-card Charizards ungraded were the Hidden Fates Charizard-GX SV49 ($624.75) and the Mega Charizard X ex SIR ($620.06), and the most valuable alternate full art was the Brilliant Stars Charizard V #154 ($270.35).

How do I find out what my Charizard card is worth?

Match the exact card first: set symbol, number, edition stamp and any special version (reverse holo, Shiny Vault, Classic Collection reprint). Then compare sold prices for the same card in the same condition, raw with raw and graded with graded. The method is in where to check sold prices.

Checklist before you compare Charizard prices

  • ☐ The set and number match exactly: Base Set 4/102, Base Set 2 4/130 and Legendary Collection 3/110 share the same artwork.
  • ☐ The version matches: 1st Edition, Shadowless, Unlimited or reverse holo are priced separately.
  • ☐ A reprint is not mistaken for the original: Classic Collection reprints from 2021 and 2026 also read 4/102.
  • ☐ Raw is compared with raw and PSA 10 with PSA 10, and each price has an “as of” date.
  • ☐ The sales volume is checked; a PSA 10 figure that rests on one sale a year is a weak guide.
  • ☐ A slab's cert number checks out (verify a cert number).
